CARNIVAL / KAISO / PUBLIC RECORD · FIELD ARCHIVE 30
A lyrical Caribbean form known for social commentary, wit, rhythmic drive and carnival performance.
01 / THE CASE FILE
Calypso developed in Trinidad and Tobago through carnival, kaiso, kalinda, African diasporic performance, French Creole song and the islands' changing colonial public sphere. A calypsonian could report an event, praise, mock, duel and build a persona inside one memorable refrain.
Tents, competitions and recordings created institutions for topical song. Censorship and colonial scrutiny proved that wit was not harmless decoration: double meaning, fictional characters and humor helped performers address power while entertaining a demanding audience.
